Planning A Children’s Birthday Party

Planning a children’s birthday party doesn’t have to throw you into a state of overwhelm. Imagine you are a child again and can have any kind of party you want. Go back to the time when you were attending a birthday party either your own or a friends. What did you like the best about the party? What would you want to do at your own birthday party if you were a child again?

Now, ask your own child what kind of a party do they want to have. Do some brainstorming together and jot down all the ideas you come up with. If your child is too young don’t pressure him to participate too much in the planning of the birthday party. You just want a few ideas of the type of birthday party he wants.

Planning a children’s birthday party around a theme makes the planning a lot easier. Think about the ideas you and your child came up with in the brainstorming session. Your son said he loved dump trucks, but most children his age love Elmo. A party planned around the theme of dump trucks and construction will please your son more than an Elmo party.

Your son’s personality can be a guideline for planning the birthday party.

Is your son full of energy and likes to keep moving?
You may want to have the birthday party outside. You could plan on playing a few boisterous running games.
Son Full Of Energy

Think about your son’s abilities.
Is he artistic and enjoys craft projects?
Does he have good motor skills?

Does he like to learn new things? Is he curious?
Plan some activities that include intellectual stimulation.

How does your son socialize with others?
Does your son only like boys when playing?
Is he comfortable with adults?
Does your son handle himself best with just a few children?
Does he thrive on social activity and wants to invite everyone?
Consider the way your son plays and interacts with his friends and incorporate this into the birthday party plan.

What is the age of your son?
Very young children have a short attention span. Plan short and quick activities for them. Older children like to think of themselves as grown-up. Take into consideration the age group of the children attending the birthday party when planning activities. For all age levels make sure you have enough adult supervision.

You have selected a theme and have a general idea of the activities for your son’s birthday party. Good. Now, you need to make a few lists and develop a time line for completing all activities on time for the birthday party.

Craft Time

Tip 1:
Make a list of all the activities involved with creating and planning a successful birthday party. Put every detail down on your list.

Party Theme
Location and Date
Invitations
Entertainment
Refreshments
Taking Pictures
Party Favors
Decorations
Extra Adults to Help
Clean The House
Thank You Notes

Tip 2:
Take each item individuality from your list and make another list of all the actions that need to be completed for that item.

Refreshments
Full meal or a snack?
Homemade cake or bakery?
What type of liquid beverages?

Do this for each item on your list.

Tip 3:
Once you have made a decision on whether you will make the birthday cake or you will purchase one from the bakery, write it down. Write down on another list all the items you will need to make the cake, if that is what you are going to do.

You now have two lists. One list of all the actions that need to be done for the birthday party. Another list of items that need to be purchased to complete your actions for the birthday party.

Tip 4:
Make a time line of when each item needs to be ordered, purchased, made and completely ready for the date of the birthday party.

Tip 5:
Make another time line for the day of the party. Included all the actions that need to be done before the party and the activities during the birthday party.

Once you have developed a good time line with your detailed lists you will be able to see if there are any conflicts in your time line. You might need to move something to another time slot or you may feel you need extra help. Most people will gladly help you if you just ask. Make sure you stick to your time line and your lists this will make everything gets done.
