While credit rightly goes to a certain fairy godmother for getting Cinderella to the ball in the first place, it was thanks to a pair of devoted, long-tailed pals that she was reunited with her prince in the end. After all, Jaq and Gus were the ones responsible for freeing Cinderella from her room in time to try on the glass slipper. With little more than some scraps of felt and yarn, you and your child can round up a pair of friendly resident mice that bear a striking resemblance to Jaq and Gus.

You’ll need:

* Jaq and Gus Mice Templates
* Felt (tan, pink, red, and green)
* Hot glue gun
* 2 small red pom poms
* Small kitchen funnel
* Dried lentils or rice
* Googly eyes
* Tan or white cotton yarn
* Wide-eyed sewing needle

Instructions:

1. Print out the mice templates and cut them out. Use the pieces to cut out Jaq’s and Gus’ bodies plus two pairs of outer ears from tan felt and two pairs of inner ears from pink felt. Cut out a 6 by 1/4 inch tan felt tail for each mouse. Then cut a 3-inch square from the red and the green felt.

2. Glue a pink inner ear atop each of the outer ears and set them aside for now.

3. Fold each mouse body in half, as shown. Glue the edges together along the back, starting at the tip of the nose and stopping an inch from the end. Glue one end of the tail to the felt just inside the opening.

4. Using the kitchen funnel, fill each mouse body with lentils or rice without over stuffing it, and then glue the opening closed. Glue on a pom pom nose, googly eyes, and a pair of ears.

5. For each mouse, cut a few 2-inch lengths from the cotton yarn, gather them into a bunch, and knot the center. Glue the knot to the head just above the eyes and between the ears, and trim the ends.

6. For whiskers, gather a few more strands of yarn and knot them together an inch from one end. Thread the opposite end of the bunch through the needle and push the needle through the felt near the nose, pulling it gently until the knot rests up against the felt. Remove the needle from the thread and knot the loose strands up against the felt on the opposite side.

7. Finally, use the felt squares to fashion hats for the mice. Roll each into a cone and glue the edge to hold it, as shown. Then trim the top and bottom. Cut a small slit in the back of the hat to fit over the ridge of the mouse’s back, and glue the hat in place atop the head.
