How To Make Cars Cookies

When Lightning McQueen rolled into Radiator Springs, a little forgotten town on old Route 66, he found there is more to life than trophies and fame. McQueen met a group of new friends and challenged him to think about the car he wanted to be.

Cindy will show you how to make cars cookies that look like Lightning McQueen and his friends. Cookies are always nice to have on hand at a birthday party. There are step by step instructions which are easy to follow. You will be pleased with the results and so will the kids.

Roll into Radiator Springs and you’ll find treats specially geared for the residents. These cookies look like Mater, Sally and Lightning McQueen! For fun, why not round up a pit crew to work on your own batch of colorful Cars characters?

You’ll need:

* Cars Cookies Template
* Batch of chilled sugar cookie dough (homemade or store bought)
* Flour
* Rolling pin
* Knife
* Confectioner’s sugar
* Kitchen scissors
* Cookie icing (red and blue)
* Small black gumdrops
* Small round hard-shelled candies or mini jellybeans for headlights
* Black licorice sticks
* Small chocolate candy rolls (such as Tootsie Roll Midgees)

Instructions:

1. Print the template and cut out the pieces. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness, then use the template shape and a knife to cut out the cookies. Bake the cookies according to the recipe instructions and let them cool.

2. Create a windshield for each cookie by snipping a marshmallow about three quarters of the way through the center, as shown.

3. Spread the marshmallow open, cut side down, and roll it flat with a rolling pin (dusting the cut surface with confectioner’s sugar first will keep it from sticking to the paper). Place the windshield template on top.

4. Use kitchen scissors to cut the shape from the marshmallow.

5. Snip the black gumdrops into thin disks to use for eyes. For tires, cut the licorice into 3/4-inch lengths. For mouths, cut a small curve of licorice for Sally, and a wider marshmallow grin for Lightning McQueen. For Mater, roll out a small chocolate candy very thin (microwave it for 2 or 3 seconds to soften it first, if needed). Then cut out a deep grin and use dabs of icing to stick two square marshmallow teeth on top.

6. Now that you have all the pieces ready, you can assemble the cookies. For Mater, simply use icing to “glue” the windshield directly atop the cookie. Then stick on the eyes, mouth, tires, and headlights (one yellow and one a darker color that looks “burned out”). For Sally and Lightning McQueen, frost the cookies the appropriate colors and then gently press the pieces in place before the icing sets.
