How To Make Bee Cupcakes and A Hive Cake

Do you remember the story of Winnie The Pooh and the Honey Tree? One morning after doing his exercises his stomach rumbles, indicating that he is hungry. He finds that his jar of honey is almost empty and wonders where he can get more honey. Pooh hears a bee and follows the bee to get honey from the hive. Things are never easy for our Pooh Bear – so now he is off on an adventure.

In honor of Winnie The Pooh, Miranda is going to show you how to make bee cupcakes and a hive cake. There are step-by-step instructions for you to follow with pictures. Very easy to do with great results.

Pooh can’t resist a yummy pot of honey, and your little ones won’t be able to resist these sweet treats — perfectly sized for preschool appetites!

You’ll need:

* 4 teaspoons active dry yeast
* Mini cupcakes, baked from your favorite recipe
* Yellow cake baked into a 6oz oven-proof custard cup
* White frosting
* Yellow sparkle sugar
* Black sparkle decorating gel
* Large marshmallows
* Chocolate chips
* Yellow frosting
* Pastry bag
* Round decorating tip (#12)
* Leaf decorating tip
* Green decorating icing
* 1 round chocolate candy such as Rolo’s or chocolate kisses

Instructions:

1. To make the bees, frost mini-cupcakes with white icing.

2. Dip frosted tops into a bowl of yellow sparkle sugar. This is a great job for preschoolers who are working on their hand-eye coordination.

4. For wings, cut the tips off marshmallows and then cut them in half. Place the wings, sticky side down, onto the top of your cupcake. Each marshmallow will give you two sets of wings. It’s easiest to use a pair of kitchen scissors. Kids will love helping with this step.

5. Press chocolate chip stingers, pointy side up into the back of the bees.

6. Finish off bees with a dollop of black decorator gel for your bee’s heads.

7. To make the hive, invert the cake as shown after baking in a 6 oz. custard cup, dome side up. You may want to place it directly onto the platter that you will serve it on, once it is frosted it will be tricky to move.

8. Put yellow icing into a pastry bag fitted with a #12 round attachment. (You can purchase yellow icing at a cake supply store, or mix your own using gel food coloring). Pipe icing in a circular pattern around the cake, mimicking the pattern of a beehive.

If you don’t have a pastry bag simply frost the dome with yellow icing and use a toothpick to create the lined beehive effect. Or you can go over and see How To Make Pastry and Piping Bags To Decorate A Cake here.

9. Push a round chocolate candy into the base of the hive. This is the entryway for your bees.

10. Finally, use green icing to create leaves around the bottom of your hive. Place green icing into a decorator bag fitted with a leaf pastry tip before arranging your cupcake bees around your hive.

After you are done making your Bee Cupcakes and A Hive Cake you may want to put them on cute Winnie The Pooh dessert plates.
