How To Make A Starfish Necklace
Today you will learn how to make a starfish necklace in honor of Mr. Loren Eiseley and the story he wrote, The Star Thrower. The story is about a young man throwing starfish back into the ocean.
He was asked by an older man walking on the beach, “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean”? The young man replied, “The sun is coming up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die”.
The older man replied, “But, young man there are miles of beach and starfish all along the banks. You can’t possibly make a difference!” The young man, bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean. “It made a difference for that one.”
The older man bent down, picked up a still living starfish, spinning it far out into the waves. He spoke, “I understand.”

You’ll need:
* 1 cup flour
* 1/2 cup salt
* 1/2 cup water
* Star shaped cookie cutters
* Cookie sheet
* Toothpick
* Acrylic paints
* Paintbrushes
* Glitter
* Pony beads
* Cotton braiding cord
* Scissors
Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. Combine flour, salt and water in a small bowl. Stir until the dough forms a ball.

2. Place the ball on a floured surface. Knead the dough, adding flour if it’s too sticky.

3. Roll the dough to a 1/4″ thickness, then cut star shapes using cookie cutters. Place the stars on an un-greased cookie sheet.

4. Use a toothpick to make a small hole at the end of each star. This will be for threading the star onto the necklace.
5. Bake the stars for 2 hours, or until firm.

6. Remove baked stars from the oven and let cool.

7. Put newspaper or scrap paper over your work surface, then paint the stars in bright sea-inspired colors.

8. While still wet, sprinkle stars with glitter.

9. Let dry and then tap off excess glitter.
10. Cut a length of braiding cord long enough to fit around your child’s head comfortably.

11. Fold the cord in half and push the loop through the hole at the top of the star.

12. Pull the remaining cord back through the loop and tighten to hold the star in place.

13. String pony beads on each end of the cord and tie the ends together.
