Boys Pirate Costumes

A pirate costume can look a bit scary. The life of a pirate wasn’t easy. Pirates would lose eyes while fighting in battle so they had to wear a black patch. Sometimes a leg would be injured and had to be amputated. So, the leg was cut off and replaced with a wooden peg leg. Hands were also badly injured and replaced with hooks.

A pirate often would wear costumes designed to terrify anyone that crossed his path. People that are intimidated will surrender without a fight. Winning a battle without a fight was always good.

Not all Boys Pirate Costumes are scary. Pirates also enjoyed being flamboyant and wearing beautiful colored fabric, gold jewelry, ornate braids and other ornaments.

In 1571 the Elizabethan Sumptuary Laws were passed which banned certain fabrics and colors for certain people. Pirates being free thinkers decided they would wear these fabrics and colors anyway.
