Boys and Girls Pirate Costumes

Pirate clothing during the Golden Age of Pirates developed into a definite style of Pirate Costumes. The Elizabethan Sumptuary Laws were passed in 1571, dictating the type of fabric and color for each social class. The Laws dictated and enforced this dress code making it easy to identify an individuals social status.

Pirates lived according to their own set of rules. They mocked the Elizabethan Sumptuary Laws and created their own costumes. They wore whatever they wanted which included fabrics and colors that were banned to the lower class.

Pirate costumes included styles for their everyday working environment from cotton, linen, wool, canvass, sheepskin and leather. For their off hours and special events they used silk, velvet, damask, taffeta and large feathers for their hats.

Their costumes were flamboyant with expensive fabric made in colors of crimson, purple, burgundy and deep blue. Very often fabric and colors didn’t matched. They would add decorative and ornate braids, jewelry and other ornaments.

Their love of independence is what makes them so appealing. Now, both boys and girls will be able to wear their own Pirate Costumes for birthday parties, Halloween and play dates.
