There are many ways you can twist and fold the T-shirt for elaborate designs. The methods are simple but you can get an endless combination and variation of design results. Try a combination of various twisting and knotting techniques of the T-shirt before putting it in the dye bath.

Circular, angular and geometric patterns can all be achieved by positioning and wrapping the string in various ways. When marbles are tied up within the T-shirt a circular composition can be created.

Any type of small object can be bunched up in the T-shirt as long as it is light and doesn’t rip the fabric. Next the object is knotted or held in place with string and will resist the dye. The stranger the object tied in the T-shirt the more unusual the design will be.

String isn’t the only thing that can be used. You may want to experiment with ribbon, rope, cord, rubber bands or pipe cleaners. First decide on the area to tie. Each tie dye designer will have to decide for themselves which method of folding and securing they like best.

Make sure you have a large enough pot so that the T-shirt can move about freely and is completely covered in the dye bath. You don’t want to have any streaks or uneven dyeing. Your T-shirt can remain in the dye bath as long as you want, it just depends on the intensity of color that you desire.
